Também me aconteceu e tive que substituir o hard drive. O Smart report serve para notificar que o disco duro está em risco de falhar e uma pessoa só nota dessa notificação quando faz algo mais forte no sistema do Mac, como uma actualização de sistema operativo.
Vê este grupo de discussão abaixo. Lá, vários usuários queixam-se do mesmo problema quando estavam justamente a instalar o Lion e já há casos com o mountain Lion.

I think that the problem with many users is that they have a smart error but they dont notice it until they try to do something like an upgrade. My Imac was working perfectly and I only noticed when trying to install Lion, a bit of googling bought me here. I charmed Apple into replacing my HDD a while ago (see my post a few back) and its ok now. Just installed ML with no issue.
Your HDD may last ages, but can you take the risk? If you want to upgrade you have little choice but to change it.
